Subject: Special Award Program in 2008 from ARSI

Please find attached two items, carrying information on the Special award of ARSI, India, in 2008.
This is a time bound Diploma and dead line is January 31, 2009

    **********************************************************************************************
    28th December 2007

The Sesquicentennial i.e., the 150th Birth Anniversary of the greatest Indian Scientist Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, falls on the 30th November 2008. Acharya J C Bose, was the first one to demonstrate that a pistol at a distance can be activated using Wireless Communication, much before G.Marconi communicated across the Atlantic. Marconi used equipment designed by Acharya JC Bose, for his experiments. Acharya never claimed any patent for his inventions. He did pioneering work in Botany, to demonstrate that plants too feel pleasure and pain like human beings.

A spearheading movement has been initiated by OM Datta VU2DSI, to bring awareness about the life, work and inventions of Acharya JC Bose. For this he had obtained special call sign AT0JCB and celebrated the birth anniversary in the past few years. He had demonstrations in various schools and colleges in his native district of Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. Special event stations using a common suffix "JCB", but with different prefixes like AT0, AU1, AU2, AU4, AU5, AU7 and AU9 were on the air from 25th November 2007 to 02 December 2007, and gave DXers and VUs, QSOs with these new prefixes. In November 2008, special event stations with prefixes AT1 to AT0, AU1 to AU0, etc., are planned for the occasion with common suffix "JCB".

Amateur Radio Society of India, the National Society and a Member of IARU Region 3, is issuing a "time-bound Special Achievement Award" on this occasion. The rules and regulations, as approved, are produced for your reference and record. We request and wish all the VUs and the DX fraternity take part and claim the award, before the Dead Line.

Good luck, 73, all the best.

    1. Period of activity: 01 January 2008 to 31 December 2008. UTC timings.

    2. Whom to work : All interested in the award must work Indian amateur radio stations with prefixes like VU2, VU3 etc., from the Mainland or the islands like Andaman, Nicobar, Lakshadweep, and Coastal Groups.. QSO with calls like VU/DL7AB is not acceptable. Contacts with the Special event stations with AT,AU, etc prefixes with common suffix "JCB", should be your aim to achieve the award.

    3. Modes: All modes CW, AM, FM, SSB, RTTY, PSK-31 etc may be used.

    4. Single or Mixed mode entries are accepted and duly endorsed.

    5. Bands: all bands from 1.8 to 29.7 MHz including WARC bands, accepted.

    6. Conditions:

6.1 For VU and 4S7 amateurs: From the VU QSOs, you have to form the name "JAGADISH CHANDRA BOSE", by taking the first alphabet from the suffixes of the stations worked.

6.2 Example: If you have worked, say, VU2ACS, VU3ITI, VU3JHM, VU2EN, VU2QNY, AT0U, etc, then, only the underlined way of picking the alphabets is correct. The last two calls worked, do not give any useful alphabet.

    6.3 In all, you need a minimum of 19 QSOs with VUs with a break up of first alphabets of suffix, like A-4, B-1, C-1, D-2, E-1, G- 1, H-2, I-1, J-1, N-1, O-1, R-1 and S-2 .

    7. For DX amateurs: You have to form the name gJ C BOSEh from the last alphabets of the suffixes.

7.1 Example: If you have worked stations like VU2ACS, VU2ELJ, VU2OO etc.,, the underlined alphabets are useful.

7.2 You need a minimum of 6 QSOs with a break up listing of the last alphabets in the suffixs like B-1, C-1,E-1, J-1, O-1, S-1.

8 All (VU, 4S7 and DX) MUST have at least one QSO with a Special event station with "JCB" suffix, from among the many Special event stations with "JCB" in their suffix planned, in November 2008.

    8. 1 This QSO can be used as a JOKER for any missing alphabet in 19 or 6 required as per clauses 6.3 and 7.2

9 For all (VU, 4S7 and DX), if they have worked five special event stations, during the year 2008 with suffix "JCB" then the condition of forming the name is not required.

10 General Certification Rules (GCR) apply. Two amateurs or a club official has to countersign your application for the Special award.

11 Fees are 5 new IRCs (expiring in Dec 2009 or 2012) for DX operators and INR 75 for the Indian amateurs

NEWS RELEASE: North America 10GHz Band Distance Record Broken

    For immediate release
For more information, contact Frank Kelly, fm.kelly @ verizon.net

New North America 10GHz Distance Record Set

CORONA, Calif. - October 29, 2007 - During the ARRL 10GHz and Up contest during the weekend of August 18 and 19, 2007, Frank Kelly, WB6CWN operating as 4C2WH in Puerto San Carlos, Mexico (DL34wt) worked AD6FP in Central California, in Grid Square CM96wa, a distance of 1,460km (907.2mi). This appears to be a new North America distance record for two-way 10GHz Amateur Radio communication.

In fact, the North America X-Band record was broken five times during the contest weekend:

First by Steve Miller, W6QIW in DM04am at 1,315km, or 817 miles on August 18, at approx. 09:36 local time.

A few minutes later, Chip Angle, N6CA and Wayne Yoshida, KH6WZ worked Frank from CM94xm (1,320km/820 mi.), then CM95qi (1,426km/886 mi.) and again from DM05ax (1,448km/899 mi.)

    Finally, on August 19, 2007 at 08:45, Gary Lauterbach, AD6FP, completed a contact with Kelly from CM96wa, a record-breaking distance of 1460km (907.2mi.).

4C2WH (WB6CWN) was able to copy the N6CA 10GHz beacon, located on Frazier mountain (DM04ms) from DL34wt at 1,286km - a new DX record for 10GHz beacon DX

Kelly made 53 10GHz contacts from DL34wt on the first weekend. The average contact distance for all 53 contacts was 1,178km and the accumulated score on just two log pages is over 65,000 points.

Frank Kelly, WB6CWN/4C2WH said, "Thanks to everyone who supported this effort by roving through the Grid Squares. This trip would not have been possible without the help and friendship of our ham- friends in Mexico, especially Bernardo Gonzalez, XE2HWB, president of the Baja Sur Radio Club, Antonio Garza, XE2HWH, and Dr. Carlos Levy, XE1YK, president of the Federacion Mexicana de Radio Experimentadores (FMRE), Mexico's equivalent of the ARRL in the USA."

San Carlos sits at the tip of a western bulge in the Baja Peninsula and has been visited by hams before, including Jack Henry, N6XQ and Chip Angle, N6CA who reported the reception of both two meter amateur and commercial FM stations during their visits there back in the mid 90s.

About the San Bernardino Microwave Society

Many of you have watched us over the past 5 years broadcast the Dayton Hamvention and last year the Huntsville Hamfest.

Live hamfest video this coming weekend August 17-19

We will be broadcasting again live video and audio of the 2007 Huntsville, AL hamfest this year via the internet. The live broadcast begins on Friday morning Aug 17 at 1400 GMT as we depart Memphis, Tn and head for Huntsville. Just as we have done before, we will be broadcasting our drive live from the car. We expect hams to be taking part in the Huntsville hamfest from all over the world. Hams will be able to join in with a real time chat room while they are watching the video. Video quality should be many times better than past hamfests that we have broadcast as we have a new high speed cam uplink. Then from there, the video is streamed on our high speed server which has unlimited bandwidth to our viewers. In addition to our live video page, you will also see a link that takes you to a page that shows a world map and on it you will see where all the virtual visitors are located. Watch as the helmet cam takes you on a virtual tour of all the tables and booths there. Also watch many activities such as the ARRL national convention and the Young Ham of The Year, to mention just a few. If you can not be there in person go to http://wa5kub.com and join in all the fun.

Please help pass this information on to all hams and clubs.

    Dear Sir,

Herewith I send you a DXpedtion announcement for communication to the Japanese radio amateurs.

The story (in the word document) announces a DXpedition to Liberia in October 2007. It's an expedtion by radio amateurs from the Netherlands in cooperation with Mercy Ships, a global charity organization that operates sea going hospitalships. What it's all about, is in the document so I won't repeat that here.

    I also enclose two pictures.
    - a photo of the flagship of Mercy Ships: the Africa Mercy in the harbour of Rotterdam (in the Netherlands) before leaving for Liberia.
    - a photo of the dxpedition members: standing left to right Arie PA3AN, Henk PA3AWW, sitting left to right Ad PA8AD and Arie PA3A.

I hope that I knocked at the right e-mail door of the JARL, and hope to hear from you.

    GB400AA
    400th Anniversary of America

Three clubs in Eastern England; Clacton Radio Club, Felixstowe and District Amateur Radio Society and Harwich Amateur Radio Interest Group have joined forces to operate the GB400AA special event station. The station will commemorate the founding of Jamestown, Virginia 400 years ago when the ships Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery arrived in Virginia, with 102 passengers to found the first English speaking settlement in North America.

The East Anglian area of England provided many of the participants in this adventure. Christopher Newport, the Admiral (leader) of the expedition and captain of the Susan Constant, was born and baptised in Harwich. Bartholomew Gosnold, who was born at Otley Hall near Ipswich, was Vice Admiral and captain of the Godspeed. There is no doubt that many of the shipsf crews came from this part of England as did many of the would be colonists.

GB400AA will be operated at the Mayflower Museum on the Ha'penny Pier at Harwich where The Harwich Society ( a local history organisation) will have an exhibition showing the local area's connections with the inaugural voyages.

The Station is planned to operate for long periods during the weekend 11th to 13th May, a high point in the international commemoration activities, and at other times during the month.

More details will be available including operating schedule plans and QSL information at the website http://www.gb400aa.net/

    2007
2GHz and Up World Wide Club Contest
Sponsored by the San Bernardino Microwave Society

    1. Object
Worldwide groups of amateurs (Clubs) work as many amateur stations in as many different locations as possible in the world on bands from 2GHz through Light.

    2. Date and Contest Period
Second weekend in May. The weekend begins at 6 a.m. local Saturday though 8 p.m. Sunday.

    3. Exchange
Six-character Maidenhead Locator; example DM04ww (see April 1994 QST, p. 86 or www.arrl/org/locate/gridinfo.html). Signal report is optional.

    4. Miscellaneous
Scheduling contacts is both permissible and encouraged.

Stations are encouraged to operate from more than a single location. A station may be worked again on each band for additional credit after a change of location.

For purposes of the contest, a change of location is defined as a move of at least 16 km (10 miles).

A transmitter used to contact one or more stations may not be used subsequently under any other call during the contest period with the exception for multiple licenses in the same family sharing the same equipment (family rule). The intent of this rule is to prohibit "manufactured" contacts.

    5. Scoring
Distance points: The distance in km between stations for each successfully completed QSO. One point per kilometer (eg., 10km is 10 points).

In making the distance calculations, a string (or ruler) and map may be used. However, calculations by computer program are preferred. Several such programs are available, including a BASIC program listing in The ARRL World Grid Locator Atlas. For purposes of making calculations, stations are defined as being located in the center of the 6-character locator sub-square (most computer programs make this assumption).

    6. Multipliers
    a.. 2 GHz to 10GHz times 1
    b.. 24 GHz = 2 times
    c.. 47 GHz = 4 times
    d.. 76 GHz and up = 8 times

    7. Bonus points
Count 1000 points bonus for each band you activate and make at least one contact.
Count 100 QSO points for each unique call sign worked per band

    8. Awards
1st place plaque and all club entries will receive a certificate, suitable for framing.

Send entries no later than 60 days after the contest to be considered.

Submit logs via regular mail only.

CALL FOR DONATIONS FOR ARISS ANTENNAS ON COLUMBUS

ESA has accepted the installation of an amateur radio station onboard the Columbus module, the space laboratory which will be attached to the International Space Station at the end of the year.

L/S-band patch antennas will be fixed on Meteorite Debris Panels (MDP) which protect the hull of Columbus. Feedthroughs and coaxial cables have already been installed and holes drilled in MDPs on the nadir of the space lab where the antennas will be fixed. The installation cost is supported by ESA. It amounts to well over 100.000?.

The antennas are developed by the Institute of Telecommunications and Acoustics of Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland.

A year ago we have launched a funding campaign for the development and manufacturing of the antennas. The collected money has permitted to start the development of antennas by the University in close collaboration with EADS and Alenia Spazio, the contractors in charge of Columbus.

The construction of Columbus has reached its final stage. The ARISS antennas shall be installed in May 2007. A most important aspect has yet to be solved : funding.

The Wroclaw University of Technology has obtained a special funding for the ARISS antennas from the Polish Ministry of Research and Development. This helps cover the total cost and limits our effort to 65.000 euro.47.000 euro has already been paid by ARISS. We still have to pay 18.000 euro to finish the work.

Our goal has been set to 80.000 euro. After the antennas are fixed on the module and Columbus is attached to the ISS, we will still need to build the onboard equipment.

Taking into account that time is getting really short, ARISS-Europe renews the call for donations to the IARU and AMSAT societies as well as to their members individually. Every contribution, small or important, is very welcome.

Donations are published on www.ariss-eu.org. You can use PayPal on the Columbus page of the website. If you prefer, your donation will be published as anonymous.

In the name of the amateur radio community, we thank the donators who contribute to the presence of amateur radio on manned territory in Space.

Please help now. We are very near to the goal. Don't let us miss the last step.

    Gaston Bertels, ON4WF

For immediate release - Announcement for 2GHz and Up Contest Club Contest

San Bernardino Microwave Society 2GHz and Up Club Contest for 2007

In the spirit of stimulating activity in the microwave bands, the San Bernardino Microwave Society (SBMS) is sponsoring a 2GHz and Up Club Contest.

For this year, 2007 the contest period runs from 6 a.m. May 12 to 8 p.m. May 13 local time.

This is a club competition in which members tally up their scores and add them with other members' scores to make up a club score.

QSO points: Count 100 QSO points for each unique call sign worked per band.

    6. Multipliers
    2 GHz to 10GHz times 1
    24 GHz = 2 times
    47 GHz = 4 times
    76 GHz and up = 8 times

    7. Bonus points
100 points bonus may be added for each unique call worked per band.

    8. Awards
1st place plaque and all club entries will receive a certificate, suitable for framing.

Send entries no later than 60 days after the contest to be considered.

Submit logs via regular mail only.
